What is Restless Legs Syndrome?

Restless legs syndrome is a type of sleep disorder in which a person feels the unpleasant feelings in the legs such as:
  • creeping
  • crawling
  • tingling
  • pulling
  • painful
Restless legs syndrome is usually experienced in the calf area but people might find its symptoms some elsewhere such as the area from thigh to ankle or even in the arm.[ad#Google Adsense]
Restless legs syndrome can appear in both legs or just one. Usually, people will experience restless legs syndrome when they are sitting or standing in one pose for a long time, for example:
  • Driving
  • Working (especially people work with computer, they sit all the day)
  • Seeing the movies
People who suffer from this sleep disorder feel the urge to move the legs when they experience the symptoms to ease the uncomfortable sensations. Usually rubbing, massaging or walking can ease the unpleasant sensations.
Restless legs syndrome doesn’t occur all the time. However, people with this disorder will find it’s more severe in the evening and the night in comparison to the daytime.

Treatments for Restless Legs Syndrome

In mild cases, RLS can be treated using home remedies such as taking hot bath, massage the legs or apply the ice packs. You will also find that reduce or stop the intake of caffeine will help relieve the problem. In more severe cases, drugs are used to handle the situation. However, the sad news is up to now, there is no drug can cure RLS completely. Drugs are not completely stop the problem but option like Benzodiazepines can interfere in the central nervous system to reduce to urge to move of the legs. Doctors also find that drugs that used for Parkinson patients are effective in helping people with RLS. If you want to go for the medication, be sure to ask your doctor for the appropriate options and doses.

How restless legs syndrome can ruin your life

People with RLS usually find it hard to relax fall asleep as they always feel the urge to move the leg when they experience this disorder. As mentioned above, RLS is usually experienced during the nighttime so it could be very hard for anyone to sleep when their legs ask for a move. Usually, the situation will become better in the early morning. At this time, the person with RLS can sleep better but he doesn’t have much time left to rest. Therefore, they are very vulnerable to other sleep disorders such as insomnia (actually, insomnia is a result of RLS) and excessive daytime sleepiness.
